Pete's Wedding ピートの結婚式

We were leaving Friday night on a red eye to go to Baltimore for Pete's wedding. That day at noon Nile found out that a prospective buyer would be coming to look at our place while we were away. Sarah and Jennie came to the rescue to help us clean. It looked fantastic.
金曜日の最終便で東海岸へ行ってきました。でも出発前金曜日の正午になんと私たちのコンドミニアムを買いたいから見たい!という人が現れていきなり大掃除。セラとジェニーが手伝ってくれて綺麗になりました。
After landing in Baltimore, we needed coffee badly. Here's Jennie smiling with her "medium" sized iced coffee.
ボルテモアについた後コーヒーにやっとたどり着けたジェニーは”ミデアムサイズ”のアイスコーヒーをてに笑顔。
Even Nile, who gave up coffee, had some that morning. We were pooped. 普通はコーヒーをやめたナイルもその日はコーヒーが必要でした。みんな疲れてたのね。

Baltimore seems to sell crabs everywhere. We past by several roadside crab dealers.
ボルテモアは蟹がいっぱい!道沿いに売店がたくさん。

We finally got to our camp site where we'd be staying that night. We had just enough time to get ready for the wedding and meet Mae, Marc and Regan's daughter.
やっとその日に泊まるキャンプ場につきました。あんまり時間がなかったけど友達のマークとレーガンの娘のメイに始めて会う時間と急いで着替える時間は有ったから良かった。
We're happy to have finally arrived and to see our friends. Jennie is extra happy because she had been traveling for 30 hours at this point.
ここまでやっとたどり着けてみんな笑顔。特にジェニーはここまで来るのに３０時間もかっかてる!

We got lost on the way to the wedding, and Pete was nice enough to delay it for us. The wedding site was beautiful.
私達３人はピートの結婚式に行く途中で迷子になってしまったけどとっても優しいピーとは待ってくれました。結婚式はとっても綺麗な所でありました。

They had a bluegrass band at the wedding and Jennie went dancing with Mae.
ブルーグラスバンドの演奏にあわせてジェニーとメイは一緒に踊ってかわいかった。

マークは凄く美味しそうに蟹を食べました。ナイルは４杯も食べました。

Pie パイ

Matt was talking with Katja about pies at Sarah's birthday party. She said that in Germany they sometimes put custard under the fruit in a pie, and they top it with strussel instead of a crust. We had some rhubarb in the fridge, so Matt decided to attempt it. Nile made him put in some strawberries because otherwise it would be too likely to flop. Matt used less sugar than usual because Katja said that pies aren't as sweet in Germany.

この前、サラの誕生日にドイツ人のカティヤにドイツのパイのことをいろいろ習ったマットは早速実験。ドイツのパイは層に成っていて下からパイ生地、カスタード、フルーツ、そして砂糖と小麦粉とバターのスチューセル。マットはルバーブだけで作りたがっていたけどナイルはイチゴ入りのほうが好きだからマットはイチゴを入れてくれました。カティヤ曰く、ドイツのパイはアメリカのほど甘くないから砂糖控えめに作りました。
The pie was pretty successful, but not as fantastic as the frozen goat milk yogurt that we made from our Union Square Cafe cookbook. Nile saw goat milk at Trader Joe's, so we picked it up because she remembered about the recipe. When we got home we realized that it called for goat milk yogurt, not goat milk. "No problem," Matt said, "I'll just make it into yogurt." So, at 6PM he had it in the yogurt maker just started. Then he calculated when it would be done. 3 AM. Should have thought of that earlier. So, alarm clock at 3AM to take care of the yogurt and move the pie from the cooling rack into the fridge.
パイ実験は結構うまく行きました。でもそれよりうまく行った実験はユニオンスクエアカフェの本のレシピを使って作ったヤギのミルクから作ったフローズンヨーグルト。ナイルがヤギの牛乳をスーパーで見つけてレシピを思いだしてせっかく買ったのに家に帰ってレシピを見たらヤギのヨーグルトのレシピだったからどうしようってマットに相談したら、マットが問題ない!　ヤギのミルクをヨーグルトにしたらいい!と言い出して早速午後６時にヨーグルトを作り始めました。でもうきうきしていたマットが忘れたのは、８時間半後にできたヨーグルトをすぐ冷蔵庫に入れなくちゃいけない。とっても偉いマットは目覚ましを朝の３時にかけてヨーグルトを作ってくれました。
The yogurt has an amazing tangy taste that is almost like lemon, and then the distinct flavor of goat milk joins it. The texture was also really fantastic. The recipe is very simple. It's just 5 cups of goat milk yogurt, 1 cup of sugar, and 1/3 cup of corn syrup. Freeze this in your ice cream freezer.
マットが苦労して作ったフローズンヨーグルトは酸味が利いてヤギ独特の後味があっておいしかった!舌触りもとっても良かったです。レシピはヤギのヨーグルトが５カップ、砂糖１カップ、コーンシロップ１／３カップです。日本ではヤギのヨーグルトがなかなかないみたいだけどもし見つけたらぜひ作ってみたら良いですよ(ヨーグルトを作る前にちゃんと時間の計算をお勧めします）

Seattle Cheese Festival シアトルチーズフェスティバル

This morning started off with mango pancakes with ricotta cheese. Mmm brunch. We were very happy to have a relaxing day without any big items scheduled in.
今朝はリコッタチーズが上に乗ったマンゴーパンケーキのから始まりました。美味しいブランチでした。ゆっくりした朝からのんびりした一日の始まりです。


While we waited for the bus to go downtown to the cheese festival, this flower basket got dropped off. They are installing 60 of them up and down our street because it's that season. :-)
パイクプレースまーッケトのチーズフェスティバルに行くためにバス停でまっていたらお花のバスケットが配達されました。なんとその日は６０のもバスケットが道の電信柱に飾られるらしいです。



Downtown there is this advertisment for the Seattle Art Museum. There are pictures of some of the displays in the museum on the inside of the box, and you can peek in through a hole in the side. ダウンタウンで新しいシアトル美術館の広告を見つけました。大きなはには穴が開いていて展示物のポスターを見れるようになってます。



Arriving at Pike Place Market, we saw a ferry departing to our favorite sushi restaurant.
パイクプレースマーケットからは私たちの好きなおすし屋さんへのフェリーが見えました。

The Cheese Festival was crazy. There were hundreds of people packed around stands handing out free samples of every kind of cheese from the stinkiest, moldy goat cheese to the saltiest hard cheese. This stand here had the best cheese we tasted, and we tasted a lot. They were selling a 30 month old hard danish cheese for only $2 per wedge. The woman selling it said it was easily $6 worth of cheese (a perfectly unbiased opinion.) We bought 4 wedges. 2 after sampling it, and 2 after determining that it really was fantastic. We also bought a couple wedges and mini wheels of some other cheeses.
チーズフェスティバルはとにかく凄かった。たくさんのが臭いチーズや、かびたゴーとチーズや、塩辛い硬いチーズなどいろいろ味見したい放題で歩くのも大変でした。写真のスタンドは私たちが一番好きだったチーズ屋さん。３０ヶ月の硬いデンマークのチーズをなんと$２で売ってくれました。いつもは$６するチーズとお店の人に言われて（本当かな?）けちな私達は４つも買いました。始めの２つは味見のすぐ後で、後の２つはやっぱりそれが一番美味しいと納得した後で。一種類じゃなんだからと他のチーズもいろいろ買いました。

たくさんの人の間を鮭のパレードが通っていきました。


Copper River salmon is really popular here. Aparently it just arrived and it's really good.
アラスカのコッパーリバーは鮭が美味しくて有名な川です。ここでその鮭を注文できます。コッパーリバーの鮭の季節は始まったばっかり。とても美味しいよ。

We stopped by Trader Joe's and at the sample booth they were serving braised romaine with parmasian. We were suckered into it and bought a couple heads of romaine. We served it with our Balarin (aka best cheese at the market) and beets.
今夜の晩御飯はサラダ。何故かと言うと買い物に行ったトレータージョーで実演販売をしていてつい買ってしまった私たち。フライパンであぶったロマノレタス（これが販売されていた）にビーツとマーケットで買ったチーズを乗せて食べました。

Happy Birthday, Sarah! サラ、誕生日おめでとう!

Matt made cupcakes for Sarah for her birthday. Sarah wanted Soccer themed cupcakes so Matt made a bunch of the new hi-tech soccer ball cupcakes and some of Sarah's favorite athlete's jersey number cupcakes. The most impressive one was the team logo cupcake.
友達のサラのためにマットはカップケーキを作りました。サラがサッカーのカップケーキをリクエスト下からマットはがんばってハイテクサッカーボールやサラの好きな選手の背番号のカップケーキを作りました。一番凄かったのはチームロゴのカップケーキ。

House Hunting家探し

We're house hunting these days. It all started with Nile surfing the web, finding a cute house, Matt going to the open house the next day, and falling in love with the house. That house turned out to the hottest house in town with 5+ inspection done before it went into a bloody bidding war--from what we understand. We opted out and went looking at other houses instead. Here are some photos from our trip. We had a house we kind of liked but we only really loved the 1st floor and Takashi told us that we should like more than 1/3 of the house if we're going to buy it and live in it for a long time so we're still looking.
最近私達は家探しをしてます。何でいきなり始まったかと言うとナイルがインターネットでかわいい家を見つけたのが始まり。マットが次の日見に行って大好きになってしまったけど、その家は何と大人気の家で気がついたらなんと５組も家の検査済でこれから金額の競争。それを知った私達は他の家を見に行くことにしました。かなり好きな家もあったけど１回だけがすきだっだたら隆に家の１／３だけが好きでもしょうがないって言われて納得したからまだ探し中。

Seattle has lots of old houses; many are over 100 years old.
シアトルの家は古い家が多くて軽く１００歳以上の家がごろごろしてる。







Claw foot tub. We heard that once you get used to claw foot tubs, you can't go back.
猫足のバスタブ。一度猫足のバスタブに慣れると普通のバスタブには戻れないらしい。


Nile realized while house hunting that she really wants a vegetable garden!
この家探しでナイルが気がついたのは小さな野菜畑が欲しい!

Key Lime Merage Pie キーライムメレンゲパイ

We found some key limes on sale at the store so we got some because key limes never go on sale around here! We had never made a key lime pie before so we didn't know what to do. Thankfully, Nile's friends from Barnard got her the Alice Water's Fruits cook book for her bridal shower so we looked in there and found a recipie for Key Lime Megange Pie. It was a little more sour and bitter than lemon merange pie and it was so good! Thanks girls!
買い物に行った時にキーライムが安売りだったから使い方が分からないけど買ってしまッた私たち。ありがたいことに結婚するときにナイルの友達がアリス・ウォーターのフルーツの本をくれたからそのキーライムメレンゲパイをマットが作りました。レモンメレンゲパイよりも少し大人と味がしました。フルーツの本ありがとう!

Asparagus pasta アスパラガスパスタ

With the left over Asparagus and Spring Onions from a few days ago, Nile made a pasta dish. We were kind of Asparagus over dosed for a while after that.

この前の残りのアスパラガスと春玉葱でパスタを作りました。ここ何日かでアスパラを食べすぎた私達はこの後アスパラ料理はしばらくなしでした。

Gasworks Parkガスワークス公園

After eating out at Red Mill Bergers, we stopped at Gasworks Park. This is a Park that used to be a Gasification Plant. They kept the old plant in place which adds a retro futureristic feel to the park.
レッドミルバーガーに御飯を食べに行った後でガスワークス公園に行ってきました。この公園は昔ガス工場だった所。工場が残っているからとってもレトロかつ未来的な公園です。

Origami Class折り紙教室

On our way back from Shima, Matt had a mini origami class for our neighbor, Binko and her daughter Aya.
志摩の帰りのマットはびんこさんとあやちゃんと折り紙を折りました。

Matt tried a new scone recipie today. Possibly because we're so used to the Joy of Cooking recipie, this one was a litte strange to us. It was good but we thought it was not fatty enough. The lavender iceing was really good, nonetheless.
マットが新しいスコーンのレシピを試してみました。Joy of Cooking のレシピに慣れすぎているのかこのスコーンは不思議でした。美味しかったけど脂肪分が少ない気がしました。それにしてもラベンダーのアイシングは美味しかった。

Spring Dinner 春御飯

Our Friend Jennie was visiting us before she left to drive to the Yukon Territory in Canada so we cooked a spring dinner for her with all the foods that she can't get there. Jennie and Nile went to the market and got a little carried away getting all kinds of fun stuff. This was all for one dinner and needless to say, we had loads of leftovers.

友達のジェニーがカナダのユーコンテリトリーに行く前に遊びに来てくれたから北に行ったら食べれないものを使って春らしい晩御飯を作りました。ナイルとジェニーがパイクプレイスマーケットに行ってたくさん買った（買いすぎ?）から御飯を作りすぎたけど楽しかったよ。

Jennie really wanted to have some artichoke before leaving for the North. These were the huge! Almost the size of Matt's head!
最後はジェニーが北に行く前に凄く食べたかったアーティチョーク。これが大きかった！マットの頭ぐらいの大きさでした。

３DPizza? 三次元ピザ?

We made Mark Bittman's corn, bacon and arugula (not pictured) pizza but as you can see we forgot to poke holes in the dough so we had a huge three dimensional mess in our oven. It was pretty funny. Luckily, we saw it before it cooked all the way through so we poked it and it deflated so that we were able to have more two dimensional dinner.

ニューヨークタイムズのまーく・ビットマンのレシピで作ったベーコン、コーン、ルッコラ（写真には載ってません）のピザは空気穴を開け忘れたため、とっても三次元になってしまいました。（笑）運良くカリカリに成る前に気がついたため、急いで空気穴を開けたら落ち着いた二次元の晩御飯になりました。

Happy Birthday Russell! ラッセル、誕生日おめでとう!

It was Russell's birthday, so Matt baked a cake. Russell, being Brittish, likes fruitcakes, but Matt wanted to decorate a cake, so he made both a fruitcake and a orange chiffon cake.

He started by candying some lemon peel, blood orange peel, and kumquats. The rest is a literal pound cake. (1 pound each of butter, eggs, flour, and sugar.)

今日はマットの会社の上司であり友達でもあるルッセルの誕生日。マットはがんばってケーキを二つ作りました。英国人のラッセルはフルーツケーキが大好きだからマットは初めてのフルーツケーに挑戦。金柑、レモン、ブラッドオレンジの皮をキャンデｲーにしてからそれをパウンドケーキに混ぜ込みました（パウンドケーキは１パウンド（約５００g）づつのバター、卵、小麦粉、砂糖です）


The orange chiffon cake was tasty, but not strong enough to be three layers tall with butter cream icing. The bottom layer was about half the thickness of the top layer.
二つ目のケーキはシュフォンケーキをデコレート。(実はデコレートをしたいから二つ目をマットは焼きました）でもふわふわのシュフォンケーキを三段も重ねたら、重みで少しぶれてしまいました。

Tulip Festival チューリップ祭り

This weekend, we went to the Tulip Festival near Anita and Jim's. Before we stopped for any tulips, we stopped for lunch. There is a saying in Japanses that says sweets before flowers, and that is what we did. Pictured is the Crab Cake we got for the lunch part and then we got a keylime pie but ate it before any photos.
今週末アニタのうちの近くのチューリップ祭りに行ってきました。チューリップの前に昼ごはんにした私達はまさに花より団子。写真はカニコッロケ(?)のサンドイッチ。キーライムパイも食べたけど、写真を撮る前に食べ終わってしまいました。


The tulip feild that we went to after paying $3 for parking was pretty.
駐車代$３を払って入ったチューリップ畑はとってもきれいでした。

It was also very crowded.

でもとっても混んでました。

Salmon, night 2

Since Matt only used half the salmon, Nile cooked the other half. She didn't know what to do so check Fumi's food blog and found this recipie using miso and mayonase. It came out very well. Thanks Fumi!
マットが使わなかった鮭の残りが有ったからどうしようか悩んだ後で文ちゃんのみそ焼きレシピを使わせてもらいました。おいしかったです。文ちゃんありがとう!
