Canning Projects プロジェクト第二弾

We had so much fun last week, we decided to do more projects with Russell and John.

先週ラッセルとジョンとプロジェクトをしたのが凄く楽しかったから今週もいろいろ作ってみました。

Our roses are in bloom, so we took a dozen blooms to make sugared rose petals and rose jam.
Here we are making sugared rose petals. The petals first get covered in eggwhites then coated in sugar.

家の庭の薔薇が満開だから長年作ってみたかった薔薇の花びらに砂糖がかかったお菓子に兆戦。これは何もする前の花びら。これから卵白を塗って肌理の細かいグラニュウー糖をかけて乾燥させます。

Extra sugar never hurts. 砂糖が多すぎる事はありません。

Then we made jalepeno jelly, rose jam, and peach butter.

残った薔薇の花でジャムとその他にハラピーニョ・ジェリーとピーチ・バターも作りました。

We nearly filled the enormous canning pot that John and Russell brought over.

ビンが多くてジョンとラッセルのもってきた大きな鍋がほとんどいっぱい。

Russell's project was to make rum toppers.

ラッセルの持って来たプロジェクトはラム・トッパー。

Rum toppers have layers of fruits as they come in to season, with almost as much sugar as fruit, then enough rum to cover it.
季節の果物が旬になるにつれ砂糖とビンに入れてラムに沈めて時間をかければラム・トッパーの出来上がり。

John's project was ginger beer.

ジョンの持って来たプロジェクトはジンジャー・ビール（アルコールなし）。

He brought his juicer over so we could make about 3 cups of ginger juice and 6 cups of lemon juice. This plus simple syrup and a little champagne yeast is all it takes.

もってきてくれた大きなジューサーを使って3カップの生姜汁に6カップのレモン汁用意。それに砂糖水とイースト加えます。

Orchids 蘭

We were very happy this spring when we saw that our hardy orchid had made it through the winter. This week it was so happy that it bloomed.
今年の冬は寒かったけど庭に植えた蘭は大丈夫でした。今週花が咲きました!

Late this spring we got a new hardy orchid at the orchid society show and sale. It's also blooming this week.

この春に蘭展で新しく買った蘭も今週開きました。

Because there are so many varieties of orchids, you can find varieties that you can plant directly in your yard. Some require less fuss than indoor varieties. That's what I recommend.

蘭はとっても種類が多いから探せば庭に直接植えられる種類もあります。屋内の種類よりも手入れが少なくてすむ種類がお勧めです。

yummy chocolate cake 絶品のチョコレートケーキ

Matt made a super yummy chocolate cake for two of Nile's friends who had a birthday this week. The recipe came from Tartine's cookbook. It was fluffy with a hint of lemon. It was very yummy. Happy birthday Bob and Audrey! Thanks Matt!

マットがナイルの友達の誕生日のためにチョコレートケーキを作ってくれました。レシピはターティンの本から。ふわふわのケーキはレモンの隠し味で絶品でした。オードリーとボブ、誕生日おめでとう！ありがとう、マット!

Pickling and Flavoring

We have been wanting to pickle carrots ever since our trip to San Francisco and to pickle asparagus ever since having a fabulous bloody mary featuring this at Cafe Campange.

John and Russell came over to help. Here the vegetables have just been blanched so the colors are great. They will turn a bit gray when they are ready to eat.

しばらく前にサンフランシスコに行った時に食べた人参ピクルスがあんまり美味しかったから人参の季節が始まったら作る予定でした。最近行ったレストランでブラディー・メリーを頼んだ時に一緒についてきたアスパラガスのピクルスも絶品だたからそれも作ってみる事に。

グルメ友達のラッセルとジョンと一緒に試しました。下の写真は灰汁抜きをした時点の写真。食べれるころにはちょっと色が抜けます。

Russell brought over his huge canning pot. It can fit 7 quarts at a time. We had 8 jars, so a couple were a little precarious, but it turned out fine.


ラッセルが大きな圧力鍋をもってきてくれたからそれを使ったけど、7瓶しか入らない所に8瓶入れたからちょっと窮屈だったけどちゃんとできました。

Wanting to do more colorful things, we made some flavored alchohol from combinations that Nile saw in Martha Stewart Living.

ピクルスを作るのがあんまり楽しかったから今月号のMartha Stewart Livingの雑誌に載ってた味つきアルコール（梅酒の友達）を作る事にしました。家にあったもので他の味も試してみました。

The fun vase is something Nile's mom gave us a few days ago.

We excited to try it in 30 days!
一緒に写ってる花瓶は家のお母さんがこの前くれました。
今から30日後が楽しみ!

Paella パエヤ

We were invited to John and Russell's for Paella for Memorial Day "BBQ".
メモリアルデーは伝統的にバーベーキュウをする日。私達はラッセルとジョンの家にパエヤ・バーべキュウに招待されました。

It was a really nice day and we sat outside sipping wine while John worked hard. Elmo is hoping for an accident.
すごく天気がいい日でワインを飲みながらジョンのパエヤを待ちました。その間エルモをは事故を待ってました。

The Paella was done with no accident! Since Nile doesn't eat chicken, pork was substituted for it. It was amazing!
何事も起こらず無事に出来ました!ナイルが鳥を食べないから豚を代用。ごちそうさまでした！

San Francisco サンフランシスコ

We were in San Francisco this weekend to see Matt's MIT friend Jesse get married.
マットの大学の友達のジェシーの結婚式のために大好きなサンフランシスコに行ってきました。
Our first stop, Friday Morning, was Tartine, a fabulous bakery.
金曜日まずは友達の勧めるベカリー、ターティンへ

The most remarkable was the pickled carrot. This has inspired us to try making the same. It seemed to have been pickled with peppercorns, garlic, and thyme.

That afternoon we met up with Emily and had more baked goods and more coffee
午後は大好きな友達のエミリーと散歩した後でお茶しました。
Saturday morning is the San Francisco farmer's market, so we couldn't miss it. Kenneth wasn't able to make it out of bed in time, but we took the Muni into town to be there.

土曜日は早朝からフェリー・ビルであるファーマーズ・マーケットへ。お泊り先のケニスは早起きが苦手だから二人で行ってきました。

We had more at the market than just this, but these were some of the highlights. The yogurt was in small ceramic crocks and absolutely delicious. Peppered marshmallows are a lot better than they sound, especially hand made marshmallows.

小さな器に入ったヨーグルトと聞いただけじゃ美味しいか分からないマショマロは他にも色々食べた中でも絶品でした。


Kenneth met us at the market and we drove to Japan Town. There we saw a poster for an origami exhibit, so we had to go see it for Matt.

マーケットの後はやっと起きたケニスと日本町へ。ポスターで見つけた折り紙展へ。

Saturday evening, we headed to the wedding.
昼からは一番のハイライトの結婚式。


Matt spent most of his waking hours in the apartment playing Portal on Kennth's Xbox 360. Here he is cramming in a level or two before we headed out. It turned out that both of Matt's other close MIT friends (Kenneth and Victor) became the MIT triplets by waring almost exactly the same thing: dark blue suit, blue shirt, yellow tie. An old MIT memo?
サンフランシスコにいる間暇な時間は常にXボックスのゲーム、ポータルにはまってたマット。結婚式に行く寸前までゲームしてました。マットと大学の友達二人は三つ子のようにはみんな青のピン・ストライプのスーツに青の入ったシャツと黄色いネクタイでした。MITの影響?

What didn't match were the socks. Kenneth wore red, Matt white, and Victor black. Who really sees the socks anyway? That's what they were thinking...
ひとつだけみんな違ったのは靴下。誰も見えないだろうとマットは白、ケニスは赤だったけどビクターだけは黒でした。

The wedding included Jewish traditions.
ユダヤ文化を取り入れた結婚式でした。


Since they got married on March 14th, π day, they had wedding pie made by friends and family rather than wedding cake. The newly weds enjoyed banana cream pie.
３月１４日、パイ（数学のπ）の日に結婚した二人はケーキの代わりに友達や家族の作ったウエディングパイがデザートでした。新婚さんはバナナ・クリームパイを楽しみました。

We stopped by Emily and Koen's house before going home.
帰る前エミリーとクンちゃんの家に寄り道。
