Moss Temple 苔寺

Because Nile likes plants, we were recommended the Moss temple. Because you have to send in a post card too book a spot in addition to costing 3000yen (~30USD), there weren't many people there and it was very enjoyable.
植物が好きならと勧められた苔寺に行ってきました。前もって往復はがきが必要な上に入場料が3000円のため人が少なく、とっても楽しめました。

The visit starts by reading prayers with the monks and writing a wish on a wooden tag. Following that, there is a tour of the garden.

最初に住職と一緒にお経を読んで、お願い事を木のお札に書きます。その後で庭園のツアーがありました。

On a side note, we also went to the Cricket temple next door. Many people visit the temple because there is a statue that grants any wish. Ninety percent of people come for that and because of that, there is a used-car-salesman-type monk selling you the yellow tag needed to make your wish come true for 30 minutes. Although there are interesting bamboo and the fact that they grow crickets year around, we cannot personally recommend visiting unless you have a wish to make to the statue.

ちなみに隣の鈴虫寺はお願い事をかなえてくれるわらじを履いたお地蔵さんがいて、それのために来たとっても人が多かったです。90％の人がお願い事用のために来る為、それようのお札を売る中古車セールスマンのような公演が30分もあったため、面白い竹や年中鈴虫を育ているけれども個人的にはお願い事がある以外は余りお勧めできません。

Jiki Miyazawa じき宮ざわ

Miyazawa is the first of two Michelin Restaruants we went to during our Japan tour.
Takashi, Natsumi and Yoshie met Mr. and Mrs. Miyazawa at a Sushi Restaurant in Karatsu. We were all looking forward to coming here and trying their famous gomadoufu, or sesame tofu.
じき宮ざわさんは日本で２軒行ったミシェランレストランの1軒目です。今ここ三人組が唐津のおすし屋さんで友達になった宮沢さんのレストランです。名物ゴマ豆腐を食べるのをすごく楽しみにしてました。

名物ゴマ豆腐。暖かくて香りがすごく良かったです。

Hamo　はも

九条ねぎと雑魚の鍋物。

Rice cooked just for our group. It continues to cook while you eat so the texture changes every time you get more.

ごはん。食べている間に蒸れるからおかわりするたびに食感が変わります。

Fruits (super sweet strawberries and juicy orange) and monaka with an inside.

フルーツ（すごく甘いイチゴとみずみずしいオレンジ）とあんこの入った最中

Dessert is followed by traditional matcha.

デザートの後は抹茶。

Nijo jo 二条城

Before Matt left for Japan, he was looking in his guide book and found Nijo jo, one of the last castles still in Japan. He wanted to go so Natsumi and Nile went along. The first time we went, we were too late and they wouldn't let us in.

日本行く前にマットが読んでいたガイド本に二条城が載ってました。マットと村田さんと三人で行ったら遅くなっていて中に入れませんでした。　

We went back again early enough so the would let us in. No pictures were allowed inside where there are beautiful hand painted fusumas.

違う日にちゃんと早めに行きました。とっても綺麗な襖とかあったけど室内は写真禁止でした。

　　

　
The garden was a still a winter scene but the as the sign at the front gate foretold, the plums were starting.

庭はまだ冬景色でしたが、表の看板のとおりに梅のつぼみが膨らみ始めてました。
　
　

Aburimochi あぶり餅

　　　

After Kinkakuji, Takashi, Matt and Nile went to Imamiya Jinjya. On our way, we got lost several times even after being told that if you go that way, you will get there even if you didn't want to. After finally getting there, we stooped for Aburimochi which is as famous as Imamiya Jinjya. The Aburimochi seems to be just as famous as the competition between the two stores. One store opened in 1002 and the other in 1656 thus have been rivals for a very long time. We went to the older one to try the "original".

金閣寺の後で父とマットと三人で今宮神社に行きました。途中何度も道が分からなくなって、こう行ったら嫌でもつくよといわれた後も少し迷子になりました。今宮神社はあぶり餅が有名で、お参りした後におやつに食べてきました。今宮神社のあぶり餅は１００１年と１６５６年に開店した向かい合わせの二軒のライバル店が有名です。私たちは古くからあるオリジナルのを食べてきました。

　

Kinkakuji 金閣寺

The second day in Kyoto, there was still snow on the ground. We went to Kinkakuji. Because we didn’t there early enough, it was very busy by the time we got there.
京都二日目、まだ雪が積もってました。雪の中、金閣寺へ行きました。早朝に行かなかったからすごく込んでました。

　　

　

　

Below is a photo of what used to be a bonsai. After 600 years, it’s a big tree that is shaped to look like a sail boat in the wind.

下の写真は、600年前足利義満の盆栽だった植物です。今は風に向かって帆を上げた形に育っています。

　

Ginkakuji 銀閣寺

The first full day in Kyoto, Matt was so excited to find snow on the ground, he went exploring by himself (something he has never done in Japan). We were staying with Yoshie’s cosine, living by Gikakuji. On his adventure, Matt walked up the Philosopher’s Walk and then to Ginkakuji. He got there at 9am, just as it opened so he was able to go in and have a quiet visit. 
京都についた次の日、京都の雪景色に目が覚めたマットはあまりに興奮して一人で冒険に行きました （マットは日本では普通誰かについて回ります）。銀閣寺近くのよしえちゃんのいとこの家に泊まっていたから哲学の道を歩いて銀閣寺へ行きました。ちょうど開園時間の9時についたらまだ人の少ない静かに見学してきました。
