Mint Gelatin and Tomatos ミントジェラチンとトマト

Last week we got two bunches of mint at the farmer's market. Nile had the brilliant idea of making it into mint gelatin after seeing our friend's blog. If anyone has tips on making it stay green, please let us know. Since we don't know the trick, mint desserts always come out brown tinted (sigh). This time we infused the mint flavor in simple syrup by soaking it over night. We also folded in whipped cream before gelling it making it more like a mousse.
先週ファマーズマーケットでミントを二束買ってきました。お友達の島田さんのサントノーレのブログを見てミントのゼリーを作ることにしました。ミントをたくさん使いながら綺麗な緑の色を保つ方法を知っていたら教えてください。コツを知らない私達のミントデザートは毎回茶色がっかてる（涙）。今回私達は砂糖のシロップにミントを一晩漬け置きしました。それに泡立てたクリームを加えてちょっとムースっぽくしてみました。

At the farmer's market today we got some amazing tomatos. They were "seconds" which means they look a little funny, but taste at least as good. We made them into a very simple tomato sauce and served it with pasta and parmasian. Matt is thinking twice about tomatos now after not really liking them for decades.
今日のファマーズマーケットの買い物はトマト。第二のトマトだから第一ほど形は整ってないけど味は同じ。とってもシンプルなトマトソースを作ってパルメジャーノチーズと一緒に食べました。このトマトを食べて何十年もトマト嫌いだったマットはトマトに関して考え直し始めました。

Doraemon Ramen ドラえもんラーメン

Matt wanted ramen for dinner so Nile made it. After placing the eggs, Nile figured out that she can make dinner into Matt's favorite robot-cat, Doraemon. It might be hard to see, but Doraemon is happily smiling not knowing what is going to happen next.
マットがラーメン食べたいって言い出したから今夜の晩御飯はラーメン。卵を載せた後でこれは!と気がついたからマットの大好きなドラえもんにしました。見にくいかも知れないけど次に何が起こるか知らないドラえもんはとっても笑顔。

Bunny! ウサギ!

This morning, before we left for work, there was a bunny across the street from our house! It was hopping away and suddenly, as if it realized it was hungry, it started munching on grass. As expected, since it was hanging out in front of a elementary school, it was no longer there when we came home.
今日仕事に行く前に家の向かいになんとウサギが!　ピョンピョン逃げていたのがお腹すいたのに気がついたようにいきなり草を食べ始めました。思った通り小学校の前にいたから仕事から帰ってきたらいませんでした。

Sunday Pork Dinner 日曜日の豚肉御飯

We had the mistakenly bought the wrong pork that Matt for dinner. Originally, we were going to put cooked meat into a salad but since he got raw pork, we suddenly changed our plans. We tried out the way we saw it cooked on the NY Times Video. It was really good! We welcome mistakes like this any time!
マットが間違えて買ってきた豚肉が今日の晩御飯でした。本当は料理してあった肉をサラダに入れる予定が生肉を買ってきたため急遽予定変更。NYタイムズのビデオの真似をして料理しました。美味しかった!こういう間違いはいつでも大歓迎!

Hot and Sour Soup ホット・アンド・サワースープ

Nile's coworer had brought Hot and Sour Soup to work so Nile really had to have some . It came out pretty good for having made it with thing in the fridge.
職場の先輩が昼ごはんにホット・アンド・サワースープを持ってきていてナイルが食べたくなって作ったスープ。冷蔵庫の中にあるものを使って作ったわりには美味しかった。

parade パレード

After all the excitement with the naked bikers, the parade finally started.
The parade stared out normal with a guy on stilts.
裸の自転車のりの興奮がおさまったらパレードの始まり。
パレードはお決まりの足長おじさんからの始まり。

Then, it became more environmentally conscious with this water troll encouraging everyone to save water.
そしたらシアトルらしくロハスな水のトロルが節水を呼びかけました。

Then, all of a sudden, we were in Egypt with Jackal followed by the pyramid and King Ramsey. Later Nile found out that it was her friend's husband that was King Ramsey! Seattle is not so big after all.
その後いきなりジャックル、ピラッミドとラムジ王と一緒にエジプトへ。
後から知ったのはこの日のラムジ王はナイルの知り合いの旦那さん！シアトル狭いです。

More Environmentalists. This group is encouraging you to recycle.
今度はリサイクルを進めるロハスなグループ。

naked bikers 裸の自転車乗り

We went to the Freemont Parade that is famous for the naked bikers (that are not part of the parade). Luckily (?) most bikers were were painted with body paint. Be warned, you can see everything!
裸の自転車のりで有名なフリーモントのパレード（裸の自転車乗りを含まない）に行ってきました。運良く（？）ほとんどの人がボディペイントで塗られてました。注意:全部見えます!

This Radio Flyer took the prize in our opinion.

Sunday Dinner 日曜日の晩御飯

On Sundays, Nile has to work so Matt is on dinner duty. Matt had some extra egg whites from making ice cream so he made some key lime mernge.
日曜日はナイルが仕事があるからマットが晩御飯当番。マットは卵白が残っていたらキーライムのメレンゲを作ってくれました。

For dinner, we were having Bridget over so we had some lamb tagine.
晩御飯は友達のブリジットが来たからラムのタジン。

We also got lots of starberries and themost beautifl rubarb from the farmer's market so Matt made us a pie too! He called it Matt's 4 and 1/2 star pie because one of the five stars got covered in red.
マーケットでイチゴをたくさんととっても綺麗なルバーブを買ったからパイも作ってくれました。名前はマットの４と１/２星パイ。５星のはずが星がひとつ赤くなったからだって。（笑）

It was good! Thanks for Dinner! おいしかった！ありがとう！

Sitka and Spruce シッカ・アンド・スプールス

For our anniversary we went to Sitka and Spruce, a restaurant we've been wanting to try for a long time. We were so excited to try it, this photo is not in focus. :-)
結婚記念日の晩御飯は長いこと気になっていたSitka and Spruceに行ってきました。 早く食べたくてピントが合ってません（笑）。

The first course was scallops in a ceviche with green olives, radishes, and tomatoes.
始めのコースは貝柱、緑のオリーブ、トマト、ラディシュのセビッチェ。

Next was grilled asparagus, peas, morrells, and cheese.
グリルされたアスパラとモレルマッシュルーム、グリンピース、とチーズ。

Soft shell crab with pickled radish and aioli sauce.
ソフトシェルクラブとラディシュの漬物とアリオリソース。

Lamb shank with pesto and vegetable broth eaten all together.
羊のもも肉とペストと野菜スープみんな混ぜて食べます。

A couple sitting next to us was celebrating 16 years of marriage and they took this photo for us. One day we hope to be like them.
隣のテーブルに座っていた16年目の結婚記念日のお祝いに来ていた夫婦が写真を撮ってくれました。いつかそうなりたいね。

We had to have dessert too, of course. This was olive oil cake with cherries and rose goat yogurt sorbet. We got the recipe for the sorbet from the owner. :-)
もちろんデザートも食べてきました。これはオリーブオイルのケーキにバラと山羊のミルクで作ったフローズンヨーグルト。お店のオーナーがレシピをくれました。:-)

The other dessert was chocolate filled crepes with strawberry olive oil ice cream.

もう１つのデザートはチョコレートの入ったクレープのイチゴとオリーブオイルのアイスクリームのせ。

The dinner was great. Sitka and Spruce has now become our new favorite restaurant.

とっても美味しかったです。シッカ・アンド・スプールスは今大好きなレストランになりました。

Five years!５年!

It is unbelievable that it has been 5 years. Time flies when you're having fun.

５年もたったなんて信じられないね。楽しい時間は過ぎるのが早いね。

DC in One Day! ワシントンDCの１日

The morning after the wedding we had a little more time than we had anticipated. Our flight was leaving at 8PM, so we decided to go to DC.
結婚式の次の日、２０時発の飛行機の前に予定より時間があったからワシントンDCに行くことに。

We were excited to get free parking just a block from the Mall.
モールのすぐ近くにただで駐車できたから大喜び。

There was a beautiful magnolia tree in bloom on the way to the Botanic Garden, our first stop.
一番の行き先は植物園。でもつく前に綺麗な木蓮が満開。

The U.S. Botanic Garden is huge and one block from the Capitol building.
U.S.植物園は首都の建物すぐ近く。

This is a white bat flower.　始めてみた白いこうもりの花。

Their orchids are displayed as epiphytes, like they are in nature.
自然の中で見るようにディスレイされているラン。

Matt liked this spiky solanum.
マットはとげとげの葉っぱがすき。

Nile thought this fern was really cool.
ナイルはそれよりシダが好き。


There are dinosaurs in the "ancient plant" room.

At the Smithsonian Natural History Museum, Matt liked this meteorite. It is iron that cooled very slowly over a period of millions of years, so it crystallized.
スミソニアンの自然史博物館でマットが好きだったのはこの隕石。鉄の隕石はゆっくりと何万年もかけて冷めると結晶になるらしい。

Nile preferred the Hope diamond.
ナイルはそんな鉄よりホープダイアモンドが好き。

Tropical storm Barry descending upon us only because Jennie deliberately removed her rain coat from her suit case before departing.
ジェニーがユーコンを出発前にわざわざスーツケースから合羽を取り出したからこの日は大雨。



At the Air and Space museum they have a small piece of the moon you can touch.
空と宇宙の博物館では月の石に触れます。

We come full circle by driving by the U.S. Botanic Garden on our way to the airport.
